In 2018, a group of dedicated professionals—including representatives from victim services, the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office, Muskingum County Children’s Services, and other community advocates—came together to discuss the urgent need for a Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in Muskingum County. At that time, any child aged 3 to 17 who was suspected of experiencing physical abuse, sexual abuse, or who may have witnessed violence had to be transported to specialized facilities out of Muskingum County for care and evaluation.
Brave Beginnings opened its doors in Zanesville, Ohio, located on Beverly Ave next to the Carr Center. Brave Beginnings provides a safe, supportive space for children who are suspected victims of physical or sexual abuse or have witnessed abuse or violence. During their appointment, children meet with a trained forensic interviewer who conducts a recorded interview, allowing them to share their story in a comfortable, non-threatening environment. They also receive a thorough physical examination by an advanced practice nurse trained in forensic examination to ensure comprehensive care.
While the child is being supported, caregivers meet with a victim advocate from a local victim services program. The advocate conducts a needs assessment and offers referrals to resources that can help address the unique needs of the child and family.
At the conclusion of the appointment, each child receives a Brave Bag filled with age-appropriate items, most donated by the community. This serves as a small “thank you” to honor the child’s bravery in sharing their story and beginning the path to healing.
Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) follow the best practices model aimed at minimizing the trauma that abuse, or violence can inflict on a child’s life. These centers provide a safe, supportive environment where specially trained interviewers and pediatric nurse examiners use evidence-based methods to conduct sensitive interviews and medical evaluations. CACs are essential for delivering comprehensive, child-centered care that not only supports the investigative process but also prioritizes the child’s emotional and physical well-being, helping them begin the journey toward healing.
Brave Beginnings is proud to be a member of the Ohio Network of Child Advocacy Centers (ONCAC) and is currently certified as a Developing Accredited Center. This certification affirms that Brave Beginnings adheres to Best Practices standards for a Child Advocacy Center. ONCAC members have conducted site visits, providing valuable guidance on practices and procedures to help Brave Beginnings work toward full accreditation as a recognized Child Advocacy Center.

Additionally, Brave Beginnings is a member of the National Children’s Alliance (NCA). The NCA serves as the national association and accrediting body for a network of 961 and growing Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) across the United States. The NCA supports CACs by offering resources, advocacy, quality assurance, and leadership on a national level. This organization plays a vital role in ensuring that CACs provide coordinated, evidence-based responses to children experiencing abuse in all 50 states, promoting a consistent, high standard of care and support in communities nationwide.
